Alfred L. Scharnberg

Alfred L. Scharnberg, 95, Rosholt, SD, passed away Friday, July 10, 2009, at the Traverse Care Center, Wheaton, MN.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt with Rev. Robert Beasley officiating. Music was provided by organist and vocalist Lana Sand.
Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery, Rosholt. Military honors were provided by the Read-Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington. Pallbearers were Lorne Scharnberg, Kevin Scharnberg, Jonathan Scharnberg, Norman Carlson, David Braun, and Curt Braun. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt was in charge of the arrangements.
Alfred L. Scharnberg was born December 22, 1913, in White Rock Township, Roberts County, SD, to Edward and Tillie (Skjonsby) Scharnberg. He attended country school in rural Rosholt and graduated from Rosholt High School in 1932. He then attended one year at Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN. After finishing school, Alfred returned to the family farm.
On September 17, 1942, Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the Archipelagos, New Guinea, the Southern Philippines, and Luzon. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Bronze Service Arrowhead, and the Good Conduct Medal. After being honorably discharged on November 30, 1945, Alfred returned to rural Rosholt to farm with his father until his father’s death in 1981. Alfred continued to farm until moving to Prairie View in Wheaton in 1998. In 2006, he made his home in the Traverse Care Center where he really enjoyed the staff and his time spent there.
Alfred was an active member of the Rosholt Assembly of God church. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing. Throughout his life, Alfred loved farming and his faith.
Survivors include his brother, Robert and his wife Tillie Scharnberg of Floodwood, MN; and seven nieces and nephews, Lorne Scharnberg, Kevin Scharnberg, Debbie Forry, Julie Ann Linski, Jonathan Scharnberg, Ruth Autio, and Susan Ross.
Alfred was preceded in death by his brother Clayton Scharnberg, sister, Edna Swanson; and nephew, Gary Scharnberg.
